I had to crawl over slippery logs to get within range of these skittish harbor seals, seen taking a break from the current-swept waters of Discovery Passage in British Columbia. This image shows man's impact on nature: the logs are grim evidence of a forest that no longer exists while the seals show their adaptability by using them as a haul-out site.
