"Paradise Interrupted"
On 11-12 September 2004, Paradise was rudely interrupted by the most destructive hurricane in the recorded history of Grand Cayman to date. This book is packed with powerful images taken by local photographer, Courtney Platt, depicting the force of Hurricane Ivan through the unprecedented and awesome destruction that Storm left behind. Few people had the luxury (or the official all clear) to explore the Island in the immediate aftermath of the Storm but this book records the damage and devastation caused by Hurricane Ivan from the immediate aftermath of the Storm through the more recent months of recovery. The photographs are accompanied by a personal account of the Storm and its aftermath, written by Joanna Lawrence. It is hoped that this book will contribute to the unofficial record of the Storm, as well as serve as a grateful reminder of what we experienced as a community, and our hope for restoring a better and more improved Cayman.
As Hurricane Ivan approached, we all knew it was going to be a bad one, but few could have anticipated the enormity of the devastation that was left here in its wake. What viewers should take away from this book is a better appreciation for the power of this storm and the extent of the damage that it inflicted on properties in Grand Cayman. Consider too, that as much wreckage as you will see here, this still represents only a fraction of the total destruction caused by the most grievously expensive disaster in Caymans recorded history. This book is intended to be a collectors item as well as a reminder to all who live in harms way, to prepare properly for the next big storm.
